A note from the Finance Committee

Great news for those taking the standard deduction

In 2026, a new rule for federal income tax is allowing married couples who file jointly and claim the standard deduction to deduct up to $2000 donated to a church or certified charitable organization. Singles can deduct up to $1000. You do not have to itemize to get these deductions. These deductions are IN ADDITION TO THE STANDARD DEDUCTIONS YOU ALREADY GET. This is a huge change because it encourages church and charitable contributions by making the deductible up to $2000 for couples and $1000 for singles. If you contribute more than these amounts, the overage is NOT DEDUCTIBLE when taking the standard deduction.

Be sure you keep contribution records and take advantage of this new rule allowing you this tax deduction. These generous new rules will make your contribution cost you less and/or allow you to contribute a bit more. A couple in the 20% tax bracket will save $400.00 on a $2000.00 donation. I was pleased to see this new rule as it allows the federal government to subsidize and encourage support to churches and charitable organizations.

NOTE: THIS IS NOT TAX ADVICE. Be sure to check with your accountant or tax preparer.
